Salvation: What must one do to be saved?

What must I do to be saved?

That is a lightning rod question that has led to much discussion and debate. Different denominations and groups of people answer that question differently.

The correct way to answer that question is to see what the Bible has to say on the subject. Once we do that, the answer becomes clear.

In John 3:5, Jesus says:

Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

Jesus is talking with a Pharisee named Nicodemus who was a ruler of the Jews.

Later in verse 36, Jesus also says, “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

So Jesus Himself tells us that we cannot enter the kingdom of God unless we are born of water and the Spirit. But what does it mean to be born of water and what does it mean to be born of the Spirit?

Being born of water means baptism. It’s hard to come up with another interpretation for that scripture.

Being born of the Spirit means receiving the Holy Spirit. To learn how to receive the Holy Spirit, we need to look at the following scripture:

Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” – Acts 2:38

If we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit when we are baptized, and we cannot enter the kingdom of God unless we are baptized, we need to be baptized. That’s what Jesus and the Bible tell us to do.

Later in chapter 3 we see what is probably the most quoted scripture in the Bible:

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” – John 3:16

It’s a shame that a lot of people only quote that verse without looking at what comes immediately after it.

For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.” – John 3:17-21

So do we love the darkness or the light? If we are conformed to the things of this world and are not obeying God, we are in darkness.

When we put God first, study to learn His commandments, and put what we have learned into action, we are walking in the light. As followers of Christ, we can encourage each other to flee the darkness and walk more and more in the light each day. Amen

That is another way of saying baptism. When you are baptized, you receive the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38 says, "And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
