Revelation 5. Forum Discussion

So far in Revelation, we have seen John’s view of heaven including:

  • God sitting on a thrown, surrounded by Four Creatures
  • A rainbow around that throne
  • Twenty-four thrones surrounding the main thrown
  • Twenty-four elders sitting on the thrones dressed in white garments with gold crowns upon their heads
  • Flashes of lightning and sounds of thunder coming from the throne
  • Seven lamps of burning fire before the throne which are the seven Spirits of God.
  • Something like a sea of glass before the throne
  • Four living creatures in and around the throne with eyes in front and behind.

You may be asking yourself, “Where is Jesus in all this?”

Jesus will appear here in chapter 5.

John begins this chapter talking about how he saw God holding a book in His right hand. The book was held closed by seven seals. A “strong angel” proclaimed with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the book and to break its seals?” – Revelation 5:2

John writes that he began to weep greatly because, “No one was found worthy to open the book or to look into it.” I don’t know if John knew what was contained in the book, but based on everything surrounding God and the book, I’m sure he knew it was incredibly significant.

Then, one of the 24 elders recognized John crying and said, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals.”

And with that, Jesus appeared! Beginning in verse 6, Jesus is described as, “A Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth.”

When Jesus had taken the book, “The four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.”

“You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.” – Revelation 5:8-10

All the elders, angels and living creatures began to worship Jesus, saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.”

Next, “Every created thing” in heaven and earth and under the earth and on the sea began saying, “To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.”

Then the four living creatures kept saying, “Amen” and they fell down and worshiped.

So what is the message contained in this book that God was holding? We will continue reading more from Revelation and finding out in our upcoming studies. Amen
