2 Thessalonians 2. Forum Discussion

Chapter 2 is the middle chapter in the 3-chapter book of 2 Thessalonians. Paul writes to request that the Thessalonians, “Not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come.” He is trying to protect those in Thessalonica from being deceived with false reports that the day of the Lord is upon them.

Paul reminds them that he covered this topic and reviewed it while he was still with the people of Thessalonica. Paul talks about how when the day of the Lord does come, the “Lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming.” Paul indicates that in those days many will believe what is false and will be judged for not believing the truth and taking pleasure in wickedness.

Chapter 2 ends with the following encouragement from Paul, “So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word.” - Amen

Comments

When Paul writes to those in Thessalonica to, "Not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter," he could easily be talking to us in present day. We are beseeched with demands on our time, our hearts, our minds, with requests from "this world" as opposed to from "above". Temptation is all around us. To stay in God's word and on the straight and narrow is the way to eternal salvation. We must be resilient not to be shaken from our composure.
