2 Thessalonians 1. Forum Discussion

Paul starts off his 2nd letter to the Thessalonians with a greeting from himself, Silvanus and Timothy. You may recall that at the end of his first letter, Paul had exhorted the brethren in Thessalonica to continue growing in their love for one another and in their faith. Paul picks up where he left off by complimenting them on their growth in both areas. He also lets them know that they are spoken of proudly among the churches of God and recognizes their perseverance amid persecutions and afflictions.

Paul acknowledges the suffering that they are going through in Thessalonica. He encourages them by writing that God will give grief to those that are afflicting the Thessalonians. He also tells them how God will give them relief when Jesus, “Comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed.”

He concludes Chapter 1 with a prayer. To this end also we pray for you always, that our God will count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.” - Amen

As if we needed another reason to fear God and obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Paul tells us in this scripture about those that turn away from God, "These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power." To spend eternity in Hell and to forfeit our opportunity to be in the presence of the Lord in heaven is too big of a penalty not to obey the Gospel, or at least try to.
